How to Choose the Perfect Place When It Is Time to Retire

Chances are you have come to terms with the fact that your home is too big to manage if it is time to retire. You don’t want to be straddled with lawn work, exterior maintenance and cleaning rooms you no longer use. If the kids, and most importantly the grandkids, are local, you may want to stay close. If this is the case, you could be looking for a home that will suit your needs and lifestyle with your family close by. However, if your family is not local, you may want to consider a different location and climate altogether.

Things to consider when it is time to retire

Answer these questions to get you started on choosing your best retirement option:

  1. What hobbies do you have?
  2. Are you an indoors or outdoors person?
  3. Do you enjoy having 4 seasons?
  4. Do you like the city or the country?
  5. Are you interested in a 2nd career? If so, doing what?
  6. Do you need a major medical facility nearby?
  7. What is your financial situation?
If possible, plan a couple trips to locations that you think may work for your retirement life.  Stay a week or two and really explore the area. If you can, check it out during different times of the year so you know what the different climate is like in winter and summer. Does that location meet the answers to your questions above? Can you afford to live there? Is there easy access to family or an airport? Make a list of pros and cons and weigh it carefully.

This can be an exciting time in your life. If you are fortunate enough to have the luxury of retiring how you choose, you should!
